Mumbai Port cargo handling up 2% y-o-y

April 15: Mumbai Port’s cargo handling increased 1.92% to 59.18 million tons (mt) in 2013-14 compared to 58.13 mt recorded in 2012-13, a senior official from the port told ICMW.
Of the total cargo, coal handled by the port during the last financial year stood at 4.45 mt, compared to 4.01 mt handled in 2012-13, registering an increase of around 11%, the official added.
According to the Indian Ports’ Association, total cargo handled at the major ports of India for 2013-14 increased slightly by 1.78% to 555.50 mt compared to 545.70 mt in 2012-13.
Mumbai Port is among the seven major ports that registered positive growth during the year.
Other than Mumbai Port, Kolkata Port, Paradip Port, Kamarajar Port, VO Chidambaranar Port, Cochin Port and New Mangalore Port recorded positive growth for 2013-14.
Kamarajar Port recorded the highest growth among the major ports during 2013-14 compared to the previous year. However, cargo handling at JNPT, Kandla, Vizag, Mormugao and Chennai ports declined during 2013-14 compared to 2012-13.
