Murray Energy sues EPA to end ‘disastrous war on coal’
26 Mar 2014
Murray Energy Corp. is suing the federal Environmental Protection Agency, accusing it of not considering job losses in its recent regulations of coal-fired power plants.
The St. Clairsville-based company is a big player in the coal industry and last year bought five West Virginia coal mines from Consol Energy Inc. (NYSE: CNX), which has shifted into the shale-gas energy sector.
Murray Energy, which bills itself as the country’s largest privately owned coal company with annual production of about 30 million tons, filed the lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia.
In its announcement of the suit, the company accused the EPA of seeking to eliminate the U.S. coal industry. It wants the EPA to end its “disastrous war on coal.”

The company said it will file more related lawsuits. It says it employs more than 7,200 workers and operates 13 coal mines in six states.
