NLC plans to deepen water bodies to pre-empt floods

Taking a cue from the recent floods in Tamil Nadu, Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) has planned to go for desilting and deepening of water bodies and waterways in its surrounding areas, according to information available with ICMW.
The company, which suffered significant production losses in November and December as flood water submerged its opencast pits, would take measures to increase the capacity of the water bodies to pre-empt any similar crisis in the future, company sources said.
This will be taken up as a “social responsibility” by the top management, the sources said.
Company Chairman and Managing Director S K Acharya, in his recent address, lauded the efforts put in by NLC employees for restoring and rebuilding the facilities and also helping the community at large in surviving the onslaught of the devastating floods, the worst in a hundred years.
Meanwhile, the water levels at two major hydro reservoirs in the state – Kundah and Mettur – have come down below the last year’s levels, while the Periyar reservoir continues to show marginal rise year-on-year, data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) shows.
The combined level at the three reservoirs has dropped to 4,390.55 ft as of January 8, compared to 4,852.17 ft recorded on the same day a year ago.
