NTPC eyes 100 mt coal from captive mines in 6-7 years

September 10: NTPC Ltd, Asia's largest power generation utility, is expecting to get as much as 100 million tons (mt) of coal annually from its captive coal mines in the next 6-7 years, the company's Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Arup Roy Choudhury said in Kolkata.
"The total reserves of our 10 captive mines are about 5 billion tons and we expect to mine 100 mtpa coal in the next 6-7 years, which will be around one-third of NTPC's total coal requirements," Choudhury said.
"Starting from this fiscal (2013-14), in a small way, we have plans to ramp up our production to about 38 mtpa by end of the 12th Five-Year Plan (2016-17)," the CMD added.
