NTPC likely to place order for 7.25 mt imported coal soon

09 Jan 2014

January 9: NTPC Ltd is likely to place orders with suppliers selected through a global tendering process by January 16-17 to procure 7.25 million tons (mt) imported coal, an industry source said.

A trade source said the price bids have been approved, but NTPC's board will take a final decision at its meeting, to be held either on January 15 or 16.

The trade source further said only three companies – Adani Enterprises, KISPL and a consortium named Agarwal Coal – had participated in the tender.

"Adani has emerged L1 in three tenders whereas KISPL had emerged as L1 in one tender," the trade source added.

A source in the company said, ""The price bids have been opened and the company is in the process of evaluating these."

"There was good participation of 4-6 companies in the tender process and the price offered is quite competitive," the source added.

NTPC had in November 2013 floated four separate tenders of 1 mt, 2.25 mt, 1.75 mt and 2.25 mt  for supply of imported coal to its Simahadri and Ramagundam (1 mt), Dadri, Unchahar, Sipat, Korba and Mouda (2.25 mt), Rihand and Vindhyachal (1.75 mt) and Talcher, Kaniha, Farakka, Kahalgaon and Barh (2.25 mt) power plants.

The last date for submission of bids was December 18.
