NTPC’s August steam coal imports spurt 155% m-o-m

The receipt of imported coal by NTPC in August 2016 spurted by 155.10% to 125,000 tons against 49,000 tons in July 2016, according to provisional data available with ICMW from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

No coal import target for the month is available as CEA has not fixed the same for any of the country’s utilities for 2016-17 in view of higher availability of domestic coal, according to information available with ICMW.

 Coal imports by NTPC in the first 5 months (April-August) of the current fiscal of 2016-17 stood at 806,000 tons against a whopping 5,746,000 tons in the same period of the previous fiscal of 2015-16, showing a huge 85.97 drop year-on-year.

 The power utility’s coal imports during the entire financial year of 2015-16 stood at 9,155,000 tons, which was 62% of the target of 14,748 mt set for the fiscal and 41% lower compared to 15,554,000 tons imported during 2014-15.

 The company was initially given a target to import 22 mt of coal in 2015-16, which was subsequently revised to 12 mt amidst increased availability of domestic coal but this was re-revised to 13 mt.

*Target for 2015-16 was initially set at 22 mt, but was subsequently reduced to 12.00 mt from July onwards and then to 13 mt.
