17 Aug 2015
New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has taken up work to mechanise the coal-handling facility at the port, according to its Chairman, PC Parida.
He was speaking after unfurling the National Flag in New Mangalore on Saturday. He said the mechanisation of coal-handling under public-private partnership model will increase productivity and efficiency at NMPT. It will also eliminate pollution.
He said NMPT would be a hub for LPG handling on the west coast after the completion of the work on the establishment of fire-fighting facilities for handling very large gas carriers at the port.
Parida said the preparation of a detailed feasibility report to set up a new port in Uttara Kannada district in the state has been entrusted to the Sagarmala Company. This was initiated after NMPT ascertained the technical feasibility on establishing a port near Belekeri in Uttara Kannada district.
He said the development of the new port at Belekeri in Uttara Kannada district would bring prosperity to that district, and it will also give a fillip to industrialization of northern Karnataka.
He said the development of a fisheries harbour at Kulai near New Mangalore has been included in the Sagarmala scheme of the Union Ministry of Shipping, and the work on it may be taken up shortly.
