October 9: Coal imports through New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) increased almost 1.6% to 0.16 million tons (mt) this year compared to 0.10 mt last year (2012-13) after the commissioning of berth number 14, an official from the port told ICMW.
"The commissioning of berth No.14 by Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) with advanced technology enabled the user to handle 16 lakh tons of coal against 10 lakh tons against last year with ease for its thermal power plant," the official said.
"There are private players like JSW, ACC and other trading houses too which also increased their volume of imports through New Mangalore Port. These cargoes are despatched to the hinterland, wherein power stations and steel units are located," he said.
