No power-cut Noida faces 9-hour outages

19 Sep 2014

Residents of several of Noida's residential sectors were left angry and frustrated by nine-hour power cuts on Thursday, after UPPCL rostered power between 5am and 7am, 11.45am and 2.45pm, 4.15pm and 6pm, and again between 7pm and 9.30 pm. Sectors 11, 12, 19, 20, 21, 34, 37, 50, 51, 61 and 62 bore the brunt of the crisis.

UPPCL claimed it faces a shortage of 1,700 MW, with the average daily supply to UP being 16 hours. Rural areas face up to 20 hours rostering. "We're looking into the crisis," said PVVNL superintending engineer Arvind Rajvedi.

FONRWA president N P Singh had a different take on the crisis. "A crisis lasts for a day or two, not this long. Noida residents have already suffered a lot over the past few months. The ongoing crisis, that began after the announcement of assembly by-poll results, is clearly politically motivated, as the state ruling party lost," Singh said. Residents supported his claim, saying that if it wanted, the state could avoid power cuts in Noida, a designated "no cut zone".

"We're fed up. Despite improved weather, power supply remains dismal. We've decided to take up the matter with the DM, authority chairman and power department officials," Singh added.

When contacted Arvind Rajvedi, superintending engineer PVVNL maintained a shortage of supply from UP. "There seems to be a crisis and we are trying to look into the matter," said Rajvedi.

As per UPPCL, there's a shortage of 1700MW with average daily supply in UP being 16 hours whereas rostering in rural areas is up to 20 hours. However, since Noida is exempt from rostering, the long outages have clearly not gone down well with residents.

Meanwhile housewives, children and other working professionals across the city tried to work around the continuous rostering throughout the day. "The residents are fed up as despite improved weather conditions, the power supply is dismal in Noida. We have decided to take up the matter at the top level and will be meeting DM and authority chairman along with power officials," said N P Singh, president FONRWA.

Singh however reiterated that current spate of power cuts is politically motivated. "Crisis can happen for a day or two. Not continuously as the residents of Noida have suffered in the last few months. The ongoing power cuts are clearly politically motivated as the state ruling party lost the assembly bypolls in Noida. We will not sit quiet on the matter and will hit the streets soon with dharna pradarshan," said Singh.

Further, due to long outages in the morning, Ganga water supply in Sector 20 kept overflowing as it could not be pushed forward through the generator to other sectors. "The supply of Ganga water from Sector 20 goes to Sectors 21, 25 and 26. But since there was no power in the morning, the Ganga water could not be rooted forward through the generator. As a result the Ganga water kept flowing into the nala (drain) adjacent to Sector 20 all day," said Suresh Tiwari, senior vice president Federation of Noida Residents Welfare Associations (FONRWA).

H S Yadav, chief maintenance engineer (Jal) however maintained that the problem could be due to slush lined up along the water pipes leading to some cracks. "I was not aware of the generator not working and will look into the matter. Sometimes mud and slush line-up along the water pipes and create cracks leading to leakage," said Yadav promising corrective action.
