29 Apr 2015
April 29: There were no steam coal imports through Chennai Port in March 2015 or in the previous month of February, as per provisional information available with ICMW.
There have been no imports of the material from August 2014 till January 2015, either.
Steam coal imports through Chennai Port, on a provisional basis, remained flat at a mere 38 tons in July 2014 compared to June, when a similar amount had come in. A quantum of 475 tons had been imported in May.
In July, a single consignment had arrived from the UK at a unit price of Rs 30,411 ($503).
It may be noted that coal handling at Chennai Port has been suspended since October 2012 following a ban imposed by the Madras High Court on handling of dirty cargo of coal and iron ore at the port with effect from October 1, 2011. The court order came following the hearing of public interest litigation (PIL). However, old stocks are getting cleared.
