In India, the previous week was a non-event for the power sector but global negative sentiment kept the index down.
Power sector stocks continue to remain lacklustre. The S&P BSE Power index has gained just 3% in the last two fiscals, while the S&P BSE Sensex during the period was up 13%.
The under-performance reflects low investor confidence in electricity producers.
Electricity generation picked up from January this year. Production is up 9% in the first three months and most of April also saw good growth. But from May the trend turned subdued.
The S&P BSE Power index decreased 1.98% to close at 1,824.39 on May 16, 2016 compared to 1,861.37 as on May 2. The highs and lows on May 16 were 1,845.80 and 1,822.04 respectively.
In a one-month period the index increased 3.40% and in three-month period the index increased 6.90%. However, it lost 10.10% from the same period last year.
During the 1-week period, most of the stocks on the S&P BSE Power closed in the negative zone. The maximum gain was registered by Suzlon Energy, with the stock increasing 5.19% to close at Rs 15.4 The maximum loss was registered by Jaiprakash Power, with the stock decreasing (-) 6.04% to close at Rs 4.2
