Only five state power utilities reported profit in 2012-13

16 Dec 2014

December 16: Contrary to general perception, West Bengal power utilities selling electricity directly to consumers, generation companies and transmission companies had performed exceptionally well in 2012-13 and managed to report profit on accrual basis when almost all but four other states had reported substantial losses.

According to data compiled by the Ministry of Power, utilities in West Bengal together with Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi and Punjab were the only five state power utilities that had reported profit during the year.

West Bengal based power utilities, with a profit of Rs 546 crore during the year, stood third in terms of profit, lagging behind Delhi (Rs 939 crore) and Maharashtra (Rs 655 crore). However, West Bengal’s performance was better than Gujarat utilities which had reported a profit of Rs 539 crore in 2012-13 and Punjab, which reported a profit after tax on accrual basis of Rs 296 crore.

The profit reported by the five state utilities came on the back of substantial losses registered by states like Tamil Nadu (Rs 11443 crore), Rajasthan (Rs 12495 crore), Uttar Pradesh (Rs 13155 crore) and Andhra Pradesh (Rs 16654 crore).

The combined loss of all the state utilities in the country taken together stood at Rs 68,085 crore in 2012-13 on accrual basis, down from Rs 72,381 crore in 2011-12, but up from Rs 52,569 crore in 2010-11.

The following table provides the detailed aggregate losses incurred by utilities in 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13:
