Panamax coal freight rates hold firm in key Pacific routes

12 Nov 2013

Panamax coal freight rates on established routes from South Africa's Richards Bay to India edged up Monday as vessel owners were seen eyeing fixtures in the Atlantic, while freight rates on the Indonesia to India routes remained stable.

Platts assessed the Panamax coal freight rates from Richards Bay to Paradip port on India's east coast at $17.20/mt and to Mundra port on the west coast at $16.70/mt Monday, up 10 cents from Friday.

"The Atlantic market is soft but slightly better than the Pacific market," an India-based charterer said, adding that some vessel owners preferred to ballast from east coast India and Southeast Asia towards South America.
Platts also assessed the Panamax coal freight rates from South Kalimantan's Banjarmasin port to Paradip at $10.40/mt and to Mundra at $11.80/mt Monday, unchanged from Friday.

Market sources reported fixtures concluded late last week at $12/mt for coal shipments from East Kalimantan's Samarinda port to Dahej on west coast India, and at about $11/mt from Samarinda to Ennore on the east coast of India.

Shipments from Samarinda to India usually attract a 50-cent premium over those from Banjarmasin, sources said.

Panamax vessel owners' rates on the East Kalimantan to west coast India route were seen at about $12.75/mt for single-port discharge and at $14/mt for two-port discharge, for early December laycan, though charterers were yet to respond to this offer, an India-based shipbroker said.

Owners' rates Monday were largely unchanged from levels seen the previous week, the shipbroker said.
