Surprisingly, steam coal imports through the port of Paradip seem to be on an uptrend since the last two months. In February 2016, these rose a sharp 73.32% to 1,066,430 tons against 615,279 tons in January 2016, according to provisional data available with ICMW.
Steam coal imports in February 2015 had stood much lower at 475,566 tons.
With the February 2016 figures, total steam coal imports in the first 11 months of the current fiscal of 2015-16 have dropped 18.30% year-on-year to 6,593,515 tons against a volume of 8,070,735 tons recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal (2014-15). Total steam coal imports in the previous fiscal amounted to 9,118,213 tons.

February 2016 imports comprised 440,468 tons from Indonesia in a band of Rs 1,722 – Rs 5,379 ($25-79) per ton, 577,962 tons from South Africa at a price band of Rs 2,543 – 3,984 ($37-57) per ton and the balance 48,000 tons from the US at a band of Rs 4,415 – Rs 4,483 ($64-65) per ton.
In January 2016, imports comprised 337,253 tons from Indonesia in a band of Rs 1,675 – Rs 3,742 ($25-55) per ton, 242,514 tons from South Africa at a price band of Rs 2,729 – 3,847 ($40-57) per ton, 32,647 tons from Australia at a unit price of Rs 3,628 ($54), and the balance 2,865 tons from “others” in a band of Rs 5,092 – Rs 5,828 ($76-87) per ton.
