Steam coal imports through the port of Paradip went up 43.93% month-on-month to 615,279 tons in January 2016 against a volume of 427,457 tons in December 2015, according to provisional data available with ICMW.
Steam coal imports in January 2015 had stood higher at 837,021 tons.
With the January 2016 figures, total steam coal imports in the first 10 months of the current fiscal of 2015-16 have dropped 27.23% year-on-year to 5,527,085 tons against a volume of 7,595,169 tons recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal (2014-15). Total steam coal imports in the previous fiscal amounted to 9,118,213 tons.

In January 2016, imports comprised 337,253 tons from Indonesia in a band of Rs 1,675 – Rs 3,742 ($25-55) per ton, 242,514 tons from South Africa at a price band of Rs 2,729 – 3,847 ($40-57) per ton, 32,647 tons from Australia at a unit price of Rs 3,628 ($54), and the balance 2,865 tons from “others” in a band of Rs 5,092 – Rs 5,828 ($76-87) per ton.
December 2015 imports comprised 263,105 tons from Indonesia in a band of Rs 2,257 – Rs 4,691 ($34-70) per ton, 163,013 tons from South Africa at a price band of Rs 3,428 – 4,694 ($51-70) per ton and the balance 1,429 tons from the US at a unit price of Rs 7,036 ($105).
