Port officials decline to comment on proposed strike

11 Feb 2015

February 11: Almost all officials at several major ports are in “wait and watch” mode over the proposed indefinite strike from March 9 by the port and dock workers against the government’s move to corporatise major ports.

ICMW contacted officials at six major ports of India -- Paradip, Vizag, Kolkata, New Mangalore, Mumbai and Marmagoa -- in this regard and all off them either declined to comment on the issue or said they are not aware about the impending strike.

Earlier, according to reports, T Narendra Rao, General Secretary of the Water Transport Workers Federation, had said an official strike notice would be served at the respective ports on February 20 and the federations will forward a joint letter to the Union shipping minister in this regard.

It was also decided to start extensive campaign against corporatisation, T Narendra Rao said.
