November 13: Although there is stagnated growth in coal imports by India in recent months, the import bill for the fuel has actually grown three-fold over the last 5 years, according to ICMW data.
Total imports of coal went up to nearly 242 million tons (mt) in 2014-15 from 73 mt in 2009-10.
However, ICMW has since revised its 2014-15 import estimates to 238.50 mt.
Over the same period, the total import bill shot up to Rs 120,225 crore in 2014-15 from Rs 39,180 crore, the estimate shows.
Over the same period, coal consumption by India has grown by 37% from 620 mt in 2009-10 to 850 mt in 2014-15, the data shows.
Production was up only 15.2% from 532 mt to 613 mt over the same period.
