Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) has given a go-ahead for coal import, which would result in additional cost of 25-50 paise per unit for consumers.
Disposing off a petition by Nabha Power Limited (NPL) & L&T Power Development Ltd. (LTPDL), the regulatory commission said PSPCL had failed to fulfill its obligation of arranging sufficient quantity of coal in terms of the bidding documents and power purchase agreement (PPA) for the 1400 MW (2x700 MW) Rajpura thermal power project.
The scheduled monthly supply to three power plants in Rajpura and Talwandi Sabo is 10.63 million tonnes (MT), of which Panem coal mines supplies Punjab 5.83 MT. Lehra Mohabbat thermal plant alone gets 2.92 lakh tonnes from Panem and its monthly coal supply will be reduced to 68,000 tonnes against scheduled supply of 3.87 MT.
The coal stock at Lehra Mohabbat thermal is 1.5 lakh tonnes, Ropar thermal plant 4.80 lakh tonnes and Bathinda thermal 96,000 tonnes. Panem meets 60% of the coal requirements of the three thermal plants of Punjab has stopped the supplies of coal from April 10, said sources.
