Railways’ December coal handling up 2.54% m-o-m

January 20: Indian Railways (IR) transported 48.91 million tons (mt) of coal in December 2014, up 2.54% from 47.7 mt handled in November 2014, according to information available with ICMW.

Revenue earnings of Railways from transportation of coal rose 2.85% to Rs 4,595.42 crore in December 2014 from Rs 4,468.05 crore in November 2014, mainly due to higher transportation of the fossil fuel.

Compared to last year, transportation of coal in December 2014 was up 10.23% from 44.37 mt in December 2013. Railways’ revenues from coal transportation also moved up 24.39% to Rs 4,595.42 crore in December 2014 compared to Rs 3,694.27 crore in the same month last year.

Overall, Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in December 2014 to Rs 9,775.45 crore, up 13.2% compared to Rs 8,635.38 crore earned in December 2013 and also up by 6.27% from Rs 9,198.67 crore earned in November 2014.

Revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users in December 2014 rose to Rs 751.07 crore, up 4.91% from Rs 628 crore in November 2014. The quantity of iron ore transported moved up by 6.89% to 9.15 mt in December compared to 8.56 mt in the previous month.

Revenues from transportation of cement in December 2014 stood at Rs 778.12 crore (9.08 mt) compared to 685.43 crore (7.86 mt) in November 2014, while that from food grains transportation rose to Rs 723.46 crore (4.37 mt) in December 2014 from Rs 704.05 crore (4.28 mt) in November 2014.

Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in December were up 13.29% to Rs 627.05 crore (4.86 mt) from Rs 578.72 crore (4.68 mt) in November.

Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricants (POL) in December 2014 stood at Rs 501.64 crore (3.59 mt), while the same from pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were at Rs 556.47 crore (3.37 mt).

Revenues from container services were at Rs 471.8 crore (4.29 mt) and from transportation of other goods at Rs 607.56 crore (6.29 mt).
