Railways’ Jan coal handling up marginally m-o-m

Indian Railways (IR) transported 49 million tons (mt) of coal in January 2016, marginally up 0.49% from 48.76 mt handled in December 2015, according to information available with ICMW.

However, revenue earnings of Railways from transportation of coal was marginally down by 0.91% to Rs 4,333.63 crore in January 2016 from to Rs 4,373.49 crore in December 2015, mainly due to slightly lower transportation volume of the fossil fuel to thermal power plants.

Compared to last year, transportation of coal in January 2016 was marginally up 0.10% from 48.95 mt in January 2015. However, revenues from coal transportation were down 8.36% to Rs 4,333.63 crore in January 2016 compared to Rs 4,729.16 crore in the same month last year.

On the other hand, Railways’ revenue earnings of Rs 9,721.78 crore from commodity-wise freight traffic in January 2016 were up 2.96% compared to Rs 9,442.40 crore earned in December 2015.

Overall, Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic were down 3.01% year-on-year in January 2016 to Rs 9,721.78 crore compared to Rs 10,023.71 crore earned in January 2015.

Similarly, revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic use in January 2016 rose to 628.29 crore from Rs 591.43 crore in December 2015, up 6.23%. Likewise, the quantity of iron ore transported was up by 9.78% to 10.47 mt in January 2016 compared to 9.54 mt in December 2015.  

Revenues from transportation of pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were at Rs 663.78 crore (3.8 mt) in January 2016 compared to Rs 571.87 crore (3.37 mt) in December 2015.

Revenues from transportation of cement in January 2016 stood at 825.25 crore (9.5 mt) compared to 755.24 crore (8.7 mt) in December 2015, while that from food grains transportation were up to Rs 818.91 crore (4.73 mt) in January 2016 from Rs 744.33 crore (4.17 mt) in December 2015.

Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in January 2016 were up to Rs 632.30 crore (4.53 mt) from Rs 614.61 crore (4.38 mt) in December 2015.

Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricants (POL) stood at Rs 518.68 crore (3.77 mt) in January 2016, compared to Rs 526.65 crore (3.78 mt) in December 2015.

Similarly, revenues from container services were higher at Rs 467.17 crore (3.92 mt) in January 2016 compared to Rs 464.59 crore (4.06 mt) in December 2015 and from transportation of other goods at Rs 679.92 crore (6.70 mt) in January 2016 compared to Rs 645.65 crore (6.25 mt) in December 2015.
