Railways’ Oct coal handling up 8.83% m-o-m

November 20: Indian Railways (IR) transported 46.20 million tons (mt) of coal in October 2014, up 8.83% from 42.45 mt handled in September 2014, according to information available with ICMW.
Revenue earnings of Indian Railways from transportation of coal rose 22.6% to Rs 4,315 crore in October 2014 from Rs 3,519.49 crore in September 2014, mainly due to higher transportation of the fossil fuel.
Compared to last year, transportation of coal in October 2014 was up 22.29% from 37.78 mt in October 2013. Railways’ revenues from coal transportation also moved up 35.93% to Rs 4,315 crore in October 2014 compared to Rs 3,174.53 crore in the same month last year.
Overall, the Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in October 2014 to Rs 8,950.69 crore, up 15.77% compared to Rs 7,731.51 crore earned in October 2013 and also up by 16.18% from Rs 7,703.85 crore earned in September 2014.
Revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users in October 2014 rose to Rs 598.62 crore, up 6% from Rs 564.70 crore in September 2014. The quantity of iron ore transported, however, fell 1.18% to 8.38 mt in October compared to 8.48 mt in the previous month.
Revenues from transportation of cement in October 2014 stood at Rs 703.94 crore (8.24 mt) compared to Rs 690.02 crore (8.97 mt) in September 2014, while that from food grains transportation rose to Rs 734.05 crore (4.35 mt) in October 2014 from Rs 624.78 crore (4.4 mt) in September.
Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in October were up 26.52% to Rs 510.82 crore (4.29 mt) from Rs 403.75 crore (4.04 mt) in September.
Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricants (POL) in October 2014 stood at Rs 480.52 crore (3.48 mt), while the same from pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were at Rs 546.52 crore (3.21 mt). Revenues from container services were at Rs 384.9 crore (4.12 mt) and from transportation of other goods at Rs 509.56 crore (5.37 mt).
