Railways’ October coal handling up 9% m-o-m

 December 1: Indian Railways (IR) transported 46.92 million tons (mt) of coal in October 2015, up 9.14% from 42.99 mt handled in September 2015 according to information available with ICMW. Similarly railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic is up 15.30% in October compared September, 2015.

 Therefore, revenue earnings of Railways from transportation of coal rose by 21.03% to Rs 4,404.8 crore in October, 2015 from Rs 3,639.5 crore in September 2015, mainly due to higher transportation of the fossil fuel to thermal power plants.

 Compared to last year, transportation of coal in October 2015 was up 1.56% from 46.2 mt in October 2014. Revenues from coal transportation also moved up 2.08% to Rs 4,404.8 crore in October 2015 compared to Rs 4,314.98 crore in the same month last year.

 Overall, Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in October 2015 to Rs 9,494.5 crore, up 6.08% compared to Rs 8,950.67 crore earned in October 2014 as well as up 15.30% from Rs 8,234.5 crore earned in September 2015.

 Similarly, revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic use in October 2015 rose to Rs 702.21 crore from Rs 535.04 crore in September, 2015, up 31.24%. Likewise, the quantity of iron ore transported rose by 16.10% to 10.96 mt in October compared to 9.44 mt in September 2015.

 Revenues from transportation of cement in October 2015 stood at 729.25 crore (8.35 mt) compared to Rs 646.05 crore (8.32 mt) in September 2015, while that from foodgrains transportation was down to Rs 538.94 crore (3.11 mt) from Rs 558.72 crore (3.69 mt) in September 2015.

 Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in October were up 15.34% to Rs 754.64 (5.25 mt) crore from Rs 654.29 crore (5.12 mt) in September, 2015.

 Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricants (POL) in October 2015 stood at 506.75 crore (3.68 mt) compared to Rs 427.48 crore (3.45 mt) in September 2015, while the same from pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were at Rs 588.11 crore (3.25 mt) in October 2015 compared to Rs 498.7 crore (3.31 mt) in September 2015.

 However, revenues from container services were at Rs 469.65 crore (3.91 mt) in October. 2015 compared to Rs 473.6 crore (3.95 mt) in September 2015 and from transportation of other goods at Rs 632.75 crore (6.26 mt) in October 2015 compared to Rs 614.11 crore (6.53 mt) in September 2015.
