Railways’ coal handling down 5.44% m-o-m in June

July 16: Indian Railways (IR) transported 41.57 million tons (mt) of coal in June 2014, down 5.44% from 43.96 mt in May 2014, according to information available with ICMW.

Revenue earnings of Indian Railways from transportation of coal also fell 1.89% to Rs 3,533.04 crore in June 2014 from Rs 3,601.27 crore in May 2014, mainly due to lower transportation of the fossil fuel.

Compared to last year, transportation of coal in June 2014 was lower by 1.79% from 42.33 mt in June 2013. However, the Railways’ revenues from coal transportation moved up 5.12% to Rs 3,601.27 crore in June 2014 compared to Rs 3,360.90 crore in the same month last year.

Overall, the Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in June to Rs 8,136.70 crore, up 8.91% compared to Rs 7,471.30 crore earned in June 2013 but down by 2.37% from Rs 8,334.09 crore earned in May 2014.

Revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users in June 2014 fell to Rs 700.40 crore, down 2.74% from Rs 720.10 crore in May 2014. The quantity of iron ore transported also fell 4.89% to 9.91 mt in June compared to 10.42 mt in the previous month.

Revenues from transportation of cement in June 2014 stood at Rs 760.14 crore (9.25 mt) compared to Rs 818.47 crore (10.22 mt) in May 2014, while that from foodgrains transportation fell to Rs 696.75 crore (4.57 mt) in June 2014 from Rs 765.15 crore (4.89 mt) in May 2014 in the previous month.

The Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in June rose sharply by 18.51% to Rs 421.70 crore (3.84 mt) from Rs 355.83 crore (3.37 mt) in May.
Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL) in June 2014 stood at Rs 481.98 crore (3.63 mt), while the same from pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were Rs 515.14 crore (3.27 mt). Revenues from container services were at Rs 373.96 crore (3.96 mt) and from transportation of other goods at Rs 540.18 crore (5.92 mt).
