September 23: Indian Railways (IR) transported 43.43 million tons (mt) of coal in August 2014, up 1.21% from 42.91 mt in July 2014, according to information available with ICMW.
However, revenue earnings of Indian Railways from transportation of coal rose 3.01% to Rs 3,576.43 crore in August 2014 from Rs 3,471.90 crore in July 2014, mainly due to lower transportation of the fossil fuel.
Compared to last year, transportation of coal in August 2014 was up by 10.54% from 39.29 mt in August 2013. The Railways’ revenues from coal transportation moved up 26.44% to Rs 3,576.43 crore in August 2014 compared to Rs 2,828.56 crore in the same month last year.
Overall, the Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in August to Rs 7,906.93 crore, up 16.7% compared to Rs 6,775.43 crore earned in August 2013 but down by 0.03% from Rs 7,909.35 crore earned in July 2014.
Revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users in August 2014 fell to Rs 607.62 crore, down 2.95% from Rs 626.06 crore in July 2014. The quantity of iron ore transported also fell 4.11% to 9.33 mt in August compared to 9.73 mt in the previous month.
Revenues from transportation of cement in July 2014 stood at Rs 627.08 crore (8.14 mt) compared to Rs 747.92 crore (9.78 mt) in July 2014, while that from food grains transportation rose to Rs 666.49 crore (4.64 mt) in August 2014 from Rs 649.59 crore (4.64 mt) in July 2014.
The Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in August fell by 1.14% to Rs 392.3 crore (3.82 mt) from Rs 396.82 crore (3.96 mt) in July.
Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL) in August 2014 stood at Rs 459.26 crore (3.66 mt), while the same from pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were Rs 526.95 crore (3.53 mt).
Revenues from container services were at Rs 395.35 crore (4.23 mt) and from transportation of other goods at Rs 512.26 crore (5.88 mt).
