Railways’ coal handling up 1.62% m-o-m in May

June 20: Indian Railways (IR) transported 43.96 million tons (mt) of coal in May 2014, up 1.62% from 43.26 mt in April 2014, according to information available with ICMW. Revenue earnings of Indian Railways from transportation of coal also rose 2.86% to Rs 3,601.27 crore in May 2014 from Rs 3,501.18 crore in April 2014, mainly due to lower transportation of the fossil fuel.

Compared to last year, transportation of coal in May 2014 was up by 0.39% from 43.79 mt in April 2013. The Railways’ revenues from coal transportation moved up 4.06%  to Rs 3,601.27 crore in May 2014 compared to Rs 3,460.63 crore in the same month last year.

Overall, the Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in May to Rs 8,334.09 crore, up 6.04% compared to Rs 7859.22 crore earned in May 2013 and also up 3.26% from Rs 8,071.17 crore earned in April 2014.

Revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users in May 2014 rose to Rs 720.10 crore, up 5.17% from Rs 684.71 crore in April 2014. The quantity of iron ore transported also rose 9.34% to 10.42 mt in May compared to 9.53 mt in the previous month.

Revenues from transportation of cement in May 2014 stood at Rs 818.47 crore (10.22 mt) compared to Rs 862.57 crore (10.54 mt) in April 2014, while that from foodgrains transportation fell to Rs 765.15 crore (4.89 mt) in May 2014 fromRs 711.37 crore (4.38 mt) in April 2014 in the previous month.

The Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in May fell sharply by 5.4% to Rs 355.83 crore (3.37 mt) from Rs 271.87 crore (2.64 mt) in April.

Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL) in May 2014 stood at Rs 499.27 crore (3.8 mt), while the same from pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were Rs 513.88 crore (3.3 mt). Revenues from container services were at Rs 378.88 crore (4.19 mt) and from transportation of other goods at Rs 569.58 crore (6.48 mt).
