Railways’ coal handling up 5.64% m-o-m in Nov

December 20: Indian Railways (IR) transported 39.91 million tons (mt) of coal in November 2013, up by 5.64% from 37.78 mt in October 2013, according to information available with ICMW.

Revenue earnings of Indian Railways from transportation of coal, also rose to Rs 3,293.18 crore in November 2013 from Rs 3,174.53 crore in October 2013 mainly due to increase in the freight charges with effect from October 1, 2013 as well as higher transportation of the material.

However, compared to last year, transportation of coal in November 2013 fell 2.39% from 40.89 mt in November 2012. In fact, the Railways’ revenues from coal transportation surged 6.72% to Rs 3,293.18 crore in November 2013 compared to Rs 3,085.75 crore in the same month last year.

Overall, the Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in November, to Rs 7,880.44 crore, up 7.94% compared to Rs 7,162.50 crore earned in November 2012 and also up by 14.57% from Rs 6,878.28 crore earned in October 2013.

Revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users in November 2013 rose to Rs 874.23 crore, up 11.63% from Rs 783.13 crore in October, 2013. The quantity of iron ore transported, however, marginally rose 4.34% to 10.58 mt in November compared to 10.14 mt in the previous month.

Revenues from transportation of cement in November 2013 stood at Rs 684.25 crore (8.26 mt) compared to Rs 736.06 crore (8.76 mt) in October 2013, while that from foodgrains transportation fell to Rs 575.88 crore (3.71 mt) in November 2013 from Rs 623.84 crore (4.16 mt) in October.

The Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in November 2013 rose sharply by 0.16% to Rs 489.75 crore (4.39 mt) from Rs 488.96 crore (4.48 mt) in October.

Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL) in November 2013 stood at Rs 478.98 crore (3.48 mt), while the same from pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were Rs 484.82 crore (3.23 mt). Revenues from container services were at Rs 327.95 crore (3.37 mt) and from transportation of other goods at Rs 531.49 crore (6.02 mt).
