Railways’ coal handling up 7% in 2014-15

April 23: Indian Railways transported 545 million tons (mt) of coal during 2014-15, up 7.38% from 508.11 mt handled during 2013-14, according to information available with ICMW.

Also Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic is up 12.67% to Rs. 1,05,312.09  crore in 2014-15 from Rs 93,471.59 crore in 2013-14 .

However, revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic use during 2014-15 fell to Rs 7913.73 crore from Rs 9163.67 crore during 2013-14, down 13.64%.

Likewise, the quantity of iron ore transported was down by 9.23% to 112.78 mt during 2014-15 compared to 124.25 mt during 2023-14.

Revenues from transportation of cement during 2014-15 stood at Rs 9181.64 crore (110.17 mt) compared to Rs 8665.32 crore (109.80 mt) during 2013-14, while that from food grains transportation rose to Rs.8550.37 crore (54.99 mt) from Rs 7894.39 crore (54.38 mt).

Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers during 2014-15 were up 19.74% to Rs 5431.12 crore (47.45 mt) from Rs 4535.89 crore (44.38 mt) during 2013-14.

Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricants (POL) during 2014-15 stood at Rs 5705.75 crore (42.73 mt) compared to Rs 5405.37 crore (41.94 mt) during 2013-14.

The revenue from transportation of pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were at Rs 6409.99 crore (39.97 mt) during 2014-15 compared to Rs 5805.33 crore (38.55 mt) in the previous fiscal.

Revenues from container services rose to Rs 4868.92 crore (48.83 mt) from Rs 4339.76 crore (43.60 mt) and from transportation of other goods to Rs 6931.38 crore (75.83 mt) from Rs 6113.12 crore (71.22 mt) during 2013-14.

In March, the Railways transported 50.83 mt of coal, compared to 45.53 mt in February 2015, resulting in an increase of 11.64 %. Also revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose 11.49% to Rs 10,175.75 crore in March 2015 from Rs 9127.09 crore in February 2015.

Revenue earnings from transportation of coal during the month rose by 8.41% to Rs 4714.17 crores from Rs 4348.47 crore in February, 2015.

Revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic use in March rose by 23.90% to Rs 710.75 from Rs 573.64 crore in February, 2015. Likewise, the quantity of iron ore transported rose by 18.12% to 10.3 mt in March compared to 8.72 mt in February.

Revenues from transportation of cement in March stood at Rs.835.15 crores (9.36 mt)  compared to 795.28 crore (8.89 mt) in February 2015, while that from food grains transportation rose to Rs 783.73 crore (4.97 mt) in March 2015 from  Rs.722.86 crore (4.67 mt) in February 2015.
