Railways’ iron ore handling revenues up 7.75% in Aug m-o-m

September 16: Indian Railways' revenues from transportation of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users in August 2013 rose to Rs 674.48 crore, up 7.75% from Rs 625.98 crore in July, 2013 whereas the quantity of iron ore transported marginally fell to 9.8 million tons (mt) mt in August compared to 9.97 mt in the previous month, according to information available with ISMW.

Revenue earnings of Indian Railways from transportation of coal also fell to Rs 2,828.56 crore in August 2013 from Rs 3,023.64 crore in July 2013.
However, compared to last year, transportation of coal in August 2013 was up 7.09% from 36.69 mt in August 2012. In fact, the Railways’ revenues from coal transportation surged 11.46% to Rs 2,828.56 crore in August 2013 compared to Rs 2,537.70 crore in the same month last year.
Overall, the Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in August, to Rs 6,775.43 crore, up 7.1% compared to Rs 6,325.70 crore crore earned in August 2012 but down by 1.73% from Rs 6,894.61 crore earned in July 2013.
On the other hand, Indian Railways transported 39.29 mt of coal in August 2013, down by 7.25% from 42.36 mt in July 2013.

Revenues from transportation of cement in August 2013 stood at Rs 565.32 crore (7.91 mt) compared to Rs 564.47 crore (7.98 mt) in July 2013, while that from foodgrains transportation fell to Rs 541.41 crore (4.33 mt) in August 2013 from Rs 539.66 crore (4.34 mt) in July 2013.
The Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in August 2013 rose sharply to Rs 458.81 crore (4.93 mt) from Rs 369.53 crore (4.09 mt) in July.
Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL) in August 2013 stood at Rs 396.77 crore (3.41 mt), while the same from pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points were Rs 419.62 crore (3.12 mt). Revenues from container services were at Rs 375.61 crore (3.69 mt) and from transportation of other goods at Rs 398.54 crore (5.16 mt).
