Railways reduces parcel size; move to benefit cement, fertilizer firms
16 Mar 2016
In a move to capture freight for smaller markets, Indian Railways has decided to reduce the standard parcel size from 1,900 tonnes to 1,260 tonnes and use a single rake to serve two or more markets in one go.
The facility will help cement and fertilizer companies in a big way.
A senior railway official said on condition of anonymity that the transporter had been receiving requests from cement and fertilizer sectors for such a move.
Indian Railways has witnessed a continuous erosion of its share in cement dispatches. It came down from over 40% at the beginning of FY 2015-16 to around 37.8% in January 2016.
