Record 8.202 mt coal imports by Indian utilities in Nov
17 Dec 2014
December 17: Triggered by a record 8.202 million tons (mt) of imports by Indian power utilities in November, the highest till date in 2014-15, the share of steam coal in this quantum during the first eight months (April-November) increased 10.47% compared to that recorded during the corresponding period of 2013-14, according to provisional data compiled by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and available to ICMW.
A weak trend in international coal prices appears to have encouraged imported coal- based utilities to go in for higher imports, industry experts believe.
Imports during the first eight months of 2014-15 stood at 60.049 mt compared to 54.359 mt imported during the corresponding period of 2013-14, the data revealed.
Of the total imports during the period, 28.493 mt was brought by imported coal-based power plants, up marginally 1.83% from 27.981 mt imported in the same period of the previous year.
However, imports by domestic coal-based power plants, which use imported coal for blending, rose 17.36% to 31.556 mt from 26.887 mt last year.
In November, imports by power utilities stood at 8.202 mt, up 1.52% as compared to 8.079 mt imported in October, largely due to higher imports by imported coal-based plants, the data revealed.
Volumes brought into India by imported-coal based utilities during the month, however, fell 12.41% to 3.7 mt (provisional) as compared to 4.224 mt imported in October.
However, imports by domestic coal-based utilities during the month rose 16.78% to 4.502 mt (provisional) from 3.855 mt (revised) in October.
The following chart provides the monthly break-up of coal imports by utilities in 2014-15 and 2013-14 (in mt):
