Record coal haulage for Aurizon in the Hunter

19 Aug 2014

Coal haulage from the Hunter Valley has contributed to record tonnages being carried by freight train operator Aurizon in the past financial year.

It is a case of coal records all round for Aurizon.

The Hunter Valley fleet hit a new annual high of 40 million tonnes, helping bump the company's total tonnage up nine per cent to 210 million tonnes.

The Hunter operation continues to hold its own carrying almost 20 per cent of the total which now includes shipments from Whitehaven's Gunnedah Basin mines.

Aurizon says while its coal revenues were flat despite the strong volume growth, it did achieve a six per cent reduction in operating costs of its coal haulage fleet.

Based on current market conditions Aurizon expects to carry up to 220 million tonnes this financial year.

Meanwhile, Aurizon expects it could be mid-next year before it commissions a new maintenance facility for its Hunter Valley rail fleet.

The company says delays in environmental approvals for the Hexham Train Support Facility have delayed the project by up to six months.

Construction on stage one of the $150 million project has commenced and will allow statutory and routine maintenance inspections as well as provisioning of fuel, water and other supplies for the train fleet.

Commissioning of the new facility is now forecast for mid next year.

The annual update also reports that $280 million is being spent on new locomotives and wagons to service Whitehaven's Gunnedah Basin mines with the first rolling stock scheduled to arrive in November.
