As many as 118 projects related to modernisation of ports, with total investments of Rs 53,354 crore, have been approved or awarded till the end of four years of the 12th Five-Year Plan that will end in 2017, an official release said.
The approvals in the four years of the current Five-Year Plan are much higher, both in numbers and value and terms, as compared to only 27 projects with an investment of Rs 13,195.85 crore approved in the entire 11th Plan (2007-2012), the release said.
All major or government-owned ports in India prepare a Five-Year perspective plan and annual plans in which various modernisation schemes are incorporated. The Ministry of Shipping monitors such projects on a regular basis.
The actual expenditure made in the port sector during the 11th Five-Year Plan was Rs 6,904.56 crore of which Rs 1227.90 crore was through the government’s budgetary support and Rs 5,676.66 crore through extra-budgetary resources.
The expenditure made during the 12th Five-Year Plan (up to 2015-16) in respect of major ports is as follows:
