Russian coal production hit a 15-month high of 1.28m tonnes/day (35.9m tonnes) in February as stronger export prices and some logistics expansion spurred mining activity, state statistics data showed on Wednesday.

The official figure was 18% higher than in February last year and up 2.4% compared with provisional estimates released earlier this month.

 

Of the total, hard coal accounted for 81%, or 1.04m tonnes/day.

 

A coal strategist with a European utility said he was “surprised” by the extent of the rise.
