S Africa’s coal exports fall for 3rd consecutive month in June
08 Jul 2014
July 8: Total coal exports through South Africa’s Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) fell third month running in June largely on lesser exports to a few Asian countries, except India, according to data made available to ICMW by one of the promoters of the terminal.
Exports in June fell by 3.55% to 4,917,647 tons from 5,098,688 tons in May. Exports in June 2013 stood at 5,307,655 tons.
Exports would have been much lower during the month of June had India not come to the rescue. In fact, India accounted for as much as 50.84% of the total coal exports through the terminal.
Beside China, exports to Argentina, Spain and Turkey also registered month-on-month rise even as there was a decline in exports to countries like Malaysia, Kenya, Madagascar and Israel.
Total exports during the first six months of 2014 through RBCT stood at 31,427,121 tons, down 4.8% as compared to 33,013,397 tons exported through the terminal during the corresponding period of 2013.
Following are the details of monthly coal exports through RBCT in 2014 and 2013 (in tons):
