The spot prices of South African (standard) and Australian steam coal softened sharply on April 5 on higher availability that led to sharp cut in offer prices, market sources said.
“The downward correction was on expected lines as prices had firmed up sharply during the past few sessions despite not much demand or bids,” they said.
With uncertainty over finalization of contract prices between Japanese utilities and Australian miner, it is expected that steam coal prices would soften a bit, they added.
Meanwhile, coking coal prices continued to firm up amidst restricted availability has miners had already cut output and the firmness in coking coal prices is also impacting offered prices for metallurgical coke.
In fact, coking coal prices have firmed up by around 8% between April 5 and March 28 to $87 per from a low of about $80.75 per ton whereas met coal prices have advanced by 5% to $125 per ton from a low of $119 per ton quoted on March 28.
Coking coal and met coke prices were quoted at $76.50 per ton and $115 per ton respectively on February 22.
ICMW had reported on March 31, quoting Gerard McCloskey, coking coal prices might spurt in coming days on account of equilibrium in demand and supply.
