June 17: The spot prices of South African standard coal firmed up on June 16 despite not much buying interest while others remained largely stable, market sources said.
South African standard coal price firmed up by $0.50 per ton even as non-standard material prices softened by similar margin, they said.
The current sluggish trend is likely to continue in absence of major interest from Indian companies who had already stocked themselves for supplies during monsoon, they said, adding, Chinese demand for imported coal continued to remain weak on multiple factors.
While there are reports of payment constraints in China, the softness in domestic coal prices and low demand from power generators due to higher availability of hydro-power is also impacting demand from China, they said.
