April 17: Spot price of South African steam coal firmed up further on apprehensions of supply concerns from Russian mines due to continued tensions between Russia and Ukraine, even as Asian demand continued to remain soft, industry sources said.
“If indeed there are any sanctions on Russian coal exports, demand for South African coal from European countries would rise and this apprehension is leading to firmness in coal prices of South African origin,” they said.
“Otherwise there is practically not much improvement in demand from Asian countries, including India,” they added.
