February 18: Spot coal prices in the international markets showed mixed trends with South African coal prices moving up amidst increased demand from the power sector and prices in other markets moving sideways, trading sources said.
The tight power supply position in South Africa may impact coal exports from RBCT, the traders said. This was in contrast with the European market where poor demand from the electricity sector is putting downward pressure on domestic prices of the commodity.
Elsewhere, coal prices showed a flat trend in the absence of enquiries from India and China. Coking coal prices remained soft due to lack of demand from the steel sector.
