January 30: Prices of South African steam coal firmed up further on January 29 amidst reports of a possible reduction in availability due to decision by a major minor to stop production from one of its leading mines, market sources said.
The reports suggested that stoppage in production from the mine (optimum) may reduce supplies to the extent of 5 million tons and this weighed on price movements on January 29 even as demand continued to remain as usual or subdued, they added.
On the other hand, Australian steam coal prices softened further on lack of Chinese enquiries even as Indonesian rates remained largely unchanged.
