SCCL to Shut Down 40-yr-old Coal Mine
15 Feb 2016
In view of reduced coal deposits in the GDK-1 mine, SCCL decided to shutdown the four-decade old mine within a day or two. As part of this, two Side Discharge Loader (SDL) machines have been brought out of the mine. In the past, GDK-6, GDK6A, GDK6B and GDK5A mines were closed down. As part of its coal mines development process, SCCL started digging the GDK-1 mine in the 2nd phase after finding plenty of coal near Godavari river basin in 1962.Since then, this mine has produced about 7.6 million tonnes of coal. While the coal was produced manually for a long time, machines like SDLs were also used in the coal excavation. Earlier, nearly 1,000 coal workers were pressed into service to excavate coal deposits with sand stowing system.
Till 2006, this mine was called third coal mine but later it was merged with GDK-1 coal mine. Nearly 90 per cent coal deposits has been excavated so far from this mine.
When contacted, RG-I GM of SCCL KV Ramanamurthy said that the process of closure has almost been completed and that it will officially be declared a closed mine on Monday or Tuesday. Workers and other technical staff employed in this mine will be deputed to other coal mines in RG-1 area.
