Northwestern China’s Shaanxi province, the country’s third largest coal mining base, produced 262.71 million tonnes of coal over January-July, down 7.14% year on year, said the Shaanxi Administration of Coal Mine Safety on August 11.
Among this, key state-owned mines -- owned by the central and provincial governments -- produced 132.43 million tonnes of coal, down 6.8% year on year, including 60.85 million tonnes from Shenhua Shendong Coal Group, down 9.2% year on year.
Coal output of local mines stood at 130.29 million tonnes during the same period, down 8.6% from the year before.
In July, Shaanxi produced 52.58 million tonnes of coal, surging 33.6% from June and up 16% from a year ago.
The province sold a total 256.73 million tonnes of raw coal during the same period, down 4.22% from the year before, with July sales at 50.5 million tonnes, rose 32.1% from a month ago and up 14% from the year prior.
By the end of July, coal enterprises across the province held 3.33 million tonnes of coal, up 4.26% on year and rising 26.97% on month.
Coal stocks at power plants stood at 2.52 million tonnes by end-July, down 27.3% year on year and down 4.5% month on month, which was enough to last for 16 days of consumption, 1 day less than the end-June level.
In July, Shaanxi’s thermal coal market remained weak and steady amid improved demand vis-a-vis high stocks at plants, with the weighted average price of 5,500 Kcal/kg NAR coal in Yulin down 2 yuan/t on month to 217.4 yuan/t, the commission said.
