North China’s coal-rich Shanxi has given sanction to 16 coal mines, with production capacity increasing 8.2 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) compared to previous levels, the provincial coal industry administration said on its website recently.
The official assessment showed that 12 of the 16 coal mines have increased production capacity to various extents following reconstruction and upgrading over the years, while capacity of three mines remained steady and one mine saw a drop of 0.5 Mtpa.
These coal mines, mostly owned by state-owned firms (e.g., China coal energy Co., Ltd., Yangquan Coal Industry Group, Lu’an Group, China Guodian), mainly produce thermal coal (12 Mtpa, up 5.7 Mtpa ), coking coal (9.9 Mtpa, up 3 Mtpa) and anthracite (11.4 Mtpa, down 0.5 Mtpa).
The capacity of these 16 mines totaled 33.3 Mtpa, with Beizu Mine and Xin’an Mine, owned by China coal Energy, both in the largest expansion of 1.8 Mtpa to 3 Mtpa from 1.2 Mtpa.
Official data showed that, as of February 5 this year, there were 1,079 coal mines in Shanxi with capacity of 1.45 billion tonnes per annum, of which 479 mines are in operation with 788 Mtpa capacity and 530 mines under construction with 539 Mtpa capacity.
