Shanxi to team up with US top coal state in carbon emissions cut
23 Sep 2015
China’s coal-rich Shanxi will strengthen cooperation with Wyoming State, the largest coal producing state in the U.S., in fields including low carbon emission, clean energy development, etc., sources learned from an industry summit recently held in the province.
Wyoming contributes nearly 40% of the country’s total coal production, with 2014 output at 360 million tonnes, reversing a four-year decline.
The coal industry in Wyoming has been facing challenges from both the market and the environment, and the supervision on carbon emission may further curtail coal demand, along with higher cost and utilities’ increasing appetite for natural gas, said Mark Northam, Dean of Energy Resources School, Wyoming University.
Shanxi province has been endeavoring to make technology innovation to realize low carbon emission, in a government move to advance energy conservation and emissions reduction.
Ultrahigh pressure circulating fluidized bed boiler ultra-low emissions technology, which was jointly developed by Taiyuan Boiler Group and Tsinghua University, could help bring down pollutants emission to similar levels in developed countries.
Shanxi turned out a coal production of 977 million tonnes last year, up 1.5% on year, data showed.
