28 Jan 2015
January 28: Coking coal imports through the port of Chennai fell sharply to a mere 19 tons in December 2014 from 152 tons imported in November 2014, as per provisional information available with ICMW.
In December, a single consignment arrived from United Kingdom at Rs 29,038 ($464) a ton.
In November, two consignments arrived from the UK at a unit price of Rs 29,333 –Rs 29,348 ($474) per ton.
It may be noted that coal handling at Chennai Port has been suspended since October 2012 following a ban imposed by the Madras High Court on handling of dirty cargo of coal and iron ore at the port with effect from October 1, 2011. The court order came following the hearing of public interest litigation (PIL). However, old stocks are getting cleared.
