December 02: After maintaining a firm trend during the past fortnight in which prices jumped by about $4.00 per ton, the sport prices of standard South African coal (6000 Kcal/kg NAR) fell sharply on December 01 in absence of low demand and liquidation of position in forward markets by some of the big traders, market sources said.
The decline of around $1.55 per ton, according to some sources, was on expected lines as there was practically no reason for spurt in prices earlier amidst low demand and ample availability.
The impact of softness in South African coal prices was witnessed on Australian and Indonesian origin coal as they too turned weak, they said.
The bids are still not forthcoming from Indian companies who all along expected prices to soften.
