January 13: Absence of any encouraging trigger led to a sharp decline in South African and Australian steam coal price on January 12 as buyers continued to elude the market even as Indonesian coal prices remained largely unchanged despite lack of bids, market sources said.
Such was the sentiment that South African standard (6,000 Kcal NAR) prices slipped by $1.40 per ton to a more than four year low of $60.50 per ton while off-spec (5,500 Kcal NAR) prices slipped by $1.25 per ton to $52.25 per ton on January 12, they added
Australian steam coal prices which had, so far, remained comparatively firm, also softened during the day, the said.
European demand remained subdued in the post-holiday season, prompting buyers to bid for low prices, they said.
The weak trend is likely to persist as there is no positive signal about revival in demand, a Kolkata-based trader said.
