Sharp rise in SA, Australian steam coal prices
21 Oct 2013
October 21: Spot coal prices in international markets firmed up sharply during the last two trading sessions of the week ending October 19 on multiple factors, industry sources said.
"While some attributed the rise in prices to reduced supplies of coal from Russia to European markets, others said there is limited availability of spot loading cargo that led to a spurt in prices," they added.
Meanwhile, the latest growth figures announced by China for the second quarter indicates that this Asian giant is back on the growth path and this is likely to spur coal demand, they said.
However, a section of traders feels a sudden surge in prices witnessed in the previous week may not last in the absence of continued absence of the expected level of demand or enquiries from major buyers like China and India.
On the other hand, a senior official of a Gurgaon-based trading company said, "Coal prices have bottomed out and these should ideally move up in the coming days."
An Indian consumer felt that some kind of speculation was on to jack up prices of South African and Australian steam coal in the futures market and its impact was felt in the spot market. "Had there been genuine demand or scarcity of material, prices in Indonesia too would have risen, but that did not happen," he said.
