Shenhua: transitions required for clean use of coal

12 Nov 2015

Coal-related firms in China should make transitions for clean and efficient use of coal, said Zhang Yuzhuo, president of Shenhua Group, at an industry forum recently held in Suzhou, eastern Jiangsu province.

The traditionally resource-driven coal industry should develop towards innovation-driven, and coal should be used as both fuel and raw material, instead of simply as fuel for now, Zhang said at the International Forum on Energy Transitions.

Coal firms should develop coal in an intensive and green way, rather than the current extensive mode, and endeavor for near zero emission to improve air quality, he said.

Shenhua Group will deepen coal technology development to improve innovation ability in the future, so as to become a world-wide excellent clean energy supplier and also clean energy solutions supplier, Zhang stressed at the forum.

As the world’s largest energy producing and consuming country, China has long been relying on coal as the main energy, generating significant resource and environment pressure. So the country now is paying great attention to the transformations in energy, said State Councilor Wang Yong in a speech.

China should expand the share of renewable energy to promote the energy revolution and to ensure the realization of the long-term energy development target, experts noted.

China aimed to raise the share of non-fossil fuels in the total energy mix to 20% by 2030. The country has 300 GW of hydropower installed capacity per annum, over 100 GW of wind power installed capacity and nearly 40 GW of solar power installed capacity.
