Singareni to import coal

Singareni Collieries is contemplating import of coal with high calorific value, to be mixed with the coal mined from its production units and sold to manufacturing utilities.

Discussions were held between the CMD, SCCL, N.Sridhar and the chairman in charge of the Minerals and Metals Trading Corporation (MMTC) Ved Prakash here on Thursday, towards exploring the possibilities of coal import by SCCL.

As of now, 200 million tonnes of coal is being imported into India, which is 25 per cent of the total consumption in the country.

The decision to sell a blend of domestic and imported coal by Singareni will benefit small manufacturing units, a press release from the company informed.

So far, layers of inferior quality coal are being left unextracted in the mines of Singareni, but now, the it can be mined and utilised by being mixed with 20 to 30 per cent imported coal. Mr.Ved Prakash expressed willingness on behalf of MMTC to supply imported coal to SCCL, and explained the processes to Mr.Sridhar, the note said.
