January 22: Slight softness was witnessed in South African coal prices on January 21 amidst reports that US steam coal was being purchased by European utilities, an industry source said.
Prices of South African coal, which had been rising consistently over the past seven-eight sessions, softened by up to $1.50 per ton on January 21, following reports of deals of US coal by European utilities at much lower rates.
Anticipation of a fall in Chinese demand, because of the New Year holidays and also because of the announcement of a 14-year low GDP growth rate of 7.7% for 2013 also affected market sentiments, they added.
